"Go get 'em, Tiger!"
I cannot write about this without spoiling it for the few of you. Since personally I think this is one of the most important storylines in the movie, here's a SPOILER'S WARNING: do not read this entry if you haven't watched it and don't wanna be spoiled.
Quick comic trivia: Tiger is the nickname MJ frequently uses to call Peter. Incidentally, the first line she said to him was, "Face it, Tiger... you just hit the jackpot!"
Our fav lady ref is back, great! The highlight of the day so far has got to be that Yang-Corteza match. Well, at least until Star Sports curiously -- and seemingly randomly -- switched to Futbol Mundial. I just checked out the results, Corteza eventually won 5-2.
That "Go get 'em, Tiger!" line, I'm sure, will become famous, if not already. Those of you who haven't watched -- and yet don't mind the spoiler, it was the last line in the movie -- well, if you don't count Spidey's "Yahoo!" a few seconds later. After leaving her fiancee at the altar, MJ ran to Peter's apartment and told him how she had made her choice. I think she would've made a much better pizza man -- woman, if you will -- than Peter. That gal could surely cover lots of blocks in a few seconds on foot, while our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man couldn't even make 42 blocks in 8 mins.
No time for romance, though, as Peter had to suit up immediately and, well, go get 'em. As he swung out of the window, that line was said. Now, I'm not sure how difficult this is, but Kirsten Dunst did a great job with that expression on MJ's face when speaking it. The look told it all. How wonderful that she had found her true love. And how proud she was of him. Yet also how hard it would be to endure the lack of companionship from this true love from then on.
In the comics they went on to marry. And MJ almost gave it up. She tried everything to make the marriage work. When it all failed, she turned escapist, even tried to kill herself at one point. Such is the price to pay when you're married to a superhero. Of course, to be fair to Spidey, it's not less stressful on him, either. Moral of the story? Sometimes love just ain't enough, I guess.
No, really. Think about it. Two persons so much in love. Two persons who share all secrets. Two persons who know about the consequences, yet decide to go ahead and give it a try. What else could possibly be stronger? Still, it's falling apart. So much for how love conquers all. Even the Romans couldn't conquer all. Then again, with Asterix and Obelix standing in their way...
But no, that's not my point. As much as I am a cynic whenever "love" subject comes up, I always find it applaudable that one -- or two, in this case -- dares and believes enough to commit oneself to something. So long as it doesn't do anyone else bad, like beheading a few unlucky dudes, that is. Commitment is such a strong word in my dictionary. Once you're committed to something, there's no turning back. Which, of course, is not exactly the right way to look at it.
All right, since it's getting long -- and Silverstone qualifying round is coming up next, I'll conclude with this. I salute you guys who have guts to set your sights on something and work hard to achieve it. I have a lot to learn from you. I think I'll start with watching Spider-Man 2 -- and listening to "Go get 'em, Tiger!" -- a few times more.
